WHAT?

Focused on unraveling power structures, the programming will be addressing topics from an hybrid design perspective engaging discussions such as politics, sustainability, institutions, new technologies and scientific developments both in Artificial Intelligence and in the current digital ecosystems. It will make innovative use of design, linguistic, experiential, mythological, political, musical and film practices as tools to engage members of the public with the experiences and the debates created. With a focus on social dreaming as a designer tool, our first series of live event series will unravel the act of thinking and processes to create.

“The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind.”
Sigmund Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams, published in 1899

In the 19th century, Freud opened up our sleepy brains, soul and unconscious to the realm of the analytic mind, the one of knowledge and information, obscure secrets, hidden thoughts, the one of our darkest and wildest dreams. With Freud, these unconscious formulations of our thoughts, close encounters with our inner soul, our dreams, could be interpreted and sometimes understood.

Dreams are a revelation of our capacities to combine various systems and mix them unconsciously at night in our sleep, behind closed doors.

Humans-producers; makers and designers of thoughts are manufacturing knowledge day and night. Indeed by dreaming, humans act political. As stated by Lawrence of Arabia “All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible”.

In our live series, we propose a symposium of 6 events in which dangerous humans are invited to share their thoughts and interogate their system of production. As a part of our discussions we will open brains and offer a vivid portrait of the act of thinking in the twenty first century. What do diplomats dream of? What do economists dream of? Is politic a dream and who initiated and performed it? How can a designer challenge sytems of thoughts? How can a designer engage her uncouscious in her creative production? When does design start and end? At what time?

Through this symposium we will perform as Homo-Fabers (humans who think) and link subject matters surrealistically as if they were dreamt, inviting in turns creatives with professionals, representant of economic, political and sociological institutions and hypnotists, psychiatrists and neuroscientists.

This curated series aim to dream out loud, to inspire young generations to think creatively about politics and the production of thinking.

For the first time, in the evening, night club De Marktkantine will open the doors of its headquarters to our dreams, rethinking the value of utopia, philosophical systems and flux of thoughts in the larger context of politics and design nowadays.

The series of event will be curated following the below programme. It will be composed of talks and finish with music and networking opportunities for members of the public. We hope to reach a young audience together with established professional in the field of design, curious and wonderers.
