In July 2020, Magid Magid in collaboration with The University of the Underground Charity announced the creation of a new programme titled ‘New Politics & Afrofuturism’. The tuition free programme- which will run from October 2020 to March 2021- is calling for Black Radical imagination and pop-culture as powerful vehicles for propelling progressive social justice narratives to mainstream audiences, with a focus on afrofuturism, black activism, climate justice along with political theory and practice.

As a part of the programme, Magid along with the selected students of 15 will work together on producing meaningful experiences and interventions answering: What would a world where both people and the planet thrive look like? What would the values, systems and culture of that world be?

Today, Magid Magid in collaboration with The University of the Underground launches an Open Call to welcome educators between October 2020 and March 2021 to teach one or more classes and/or workshops for the programme online.

We are specifically looking for educators to teach classes on the below topics (or related topics of your suggestion):

  • -Afrofuturism (ie: Afrofuturism and music/film/theatre/etc ;Afrofuturism and Aesthetics, Afrofuturism and politics, Afrofuturism and philosophy, Afrofuturism and history/ geography, economy, Afrofuturism and green politics/ sustainability)
  • -Political Disruption
  • -Black Radical Imagination
  • -Climate Justice
  • -Art & Activism
  • -Philosophy & Political Struggle
  • -Indigenous Studies (ie: Indigenous Studies and new thinking/mode of research; Indegenous Studies and systems of oppression, Indegenous culture and music/film/theatre, Indigenous and green politics/ sustainability etc….)
  • -Migration (migration and diasporas, migration and culture, migration and memory, migration and new geographies, migration and urbanism)

 

The selected educators will benefit from the support of the University of the Underground charity in delivering these virtual classes, tutorials and/ or digital workshops. Today, the University of the Underground calls for them to send them proposals for online classes.

The University of the Underground charity pays 120 euros for an online class (usually for one hour) and 200 euros for a workshop (usually for 1, 2 to 3 hours organized in the day). You can submit proposals for multiple classes.

Priority will be given to People of Colour (POC) educators, the selection process will include Magid Magid- Head of Programme, Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian Ph.D- director of the University of the Underground charity with one alumni from the University of the Underground charity.

** Please note, the University of the Underground is a very small charity, our budget is extremely limited and relies on public donations and corporate responsibilities. This means that we can’t respond to all questions and requests by email – so do make sure to read all the instructions before you apply. And yes all proposals are welcomed.

WHEN?

  • -Programme announced and open call announced Tuesday 18th July 2020
  • -Deadline for open call educators applications: Friday 11th September 2020
  • -Open call for educators and visiting participants selection by panel (the panel will include Magid Magid- Head of Programme, Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian Ph.D- director of the University of the Underground charity with one alumni from the University of the Underground charity): 16th September 2020
  • -Final Results Communicated: Thursday 24th September 2020
  • -Programme Begins: 19th October 2020
  • -End of Programme: 4th March 2021
    Please note; lectures, tutorials and workshops will be screened on Instagram live and will be broadcast to the public via our social media platforms (YouTube etc…) in order to share the learning with a wider group of students.
